Over the past week, I've found myself noticing something I hadn't paid much attention to before.
It started during lunch at Pick n Pay.
Then again while walking through Johannesburg.
Then again at work.
Everywhere I looked, someone seemed to be wearing a football jersey.
Not necessarily this season's kit.
Not necessarily because they were going to a match.
Just... wearing it.
It made me wonder:
Is football fashion making a comeback?
A Different Kind of Football Shirt
The interesting part isn't that people are wearing jerseys.
It's which jerseys they're wearing.
Among the older crowd I'd estimate somewhere between their early 30s and mid-50s, I kept noticing vintage Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs jerseys.
Not the latest replicas.
The older knitted versions.
The kind many South Africans instantly recognise.
Whether it was nostalgia, club loyalty or simply great style, they stood out.
Then there was another Kaizer Chiefs jersey.
Same story.
Not match day.
Not outside a stadium.
Just everyday life.
It felt like these shirts had become part of someone's wardrobe again rather than something only worn on game day.
The Younger Generation Is Wearing Something Different
What surprised me even more was the age difference.
Personally, I haven't yet noticed many people under 30 wearing those old-school Pirates or Chiefs jerseys.
Instead, younger people seem to be leaning towards something else entirely.
Premier League shirts.
Barcelona.
Manchester United.
Arsenal.
Liverpool.
PSG.
And one jersey that I've been seeing everywhere lately...
The green and yellow Bafana Bafana kits.
Whether it's because of the FIFA Club World Cup or simply because football shirts have become fashionable again, it's definitely one of the jerseys I've noticed the most.
Is This Just Club World Cup Fever?
That's the obvious explanation.
Football is everywhere right now.
Highlights are constantly on television.
Social media is flooded with clips.
Friends are talking about matches again.
Whenever a major football tournament comes around, interest naturally grows.
But that still doesn't explain something.
Why are people pulling out jerseys that are years-even decades-old?
Nobody had to buy a vintage Orlando Pirates jersey this week.
They already owned it.
Which makes me think this isn't only about football.
Maybe it's also about nostalgia.
Football Shirts Have Become Fashion
If you've spent any time on TikTok, Pinterest or Instagram recently, you've probably noticed football jerseys being styled in ways that have nothing to do with sport.
- Baggy jeans.
- Cargo pants.
- Silver jewellery.
- Adidas Sambas.
- Puma Speedcats.
Football shirts have quietly crossed into streetwear.
What was once considered "sportswear" is now simply another fashion piece.
And South Africa seems to be following that movement in its own way.
Maybe We're Seeing Two Trends
The more I think about it, the more it feels like there are actually two different football fashion trends happening.
Older South Africans seem to be bringing back classic Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs jerseys-the ones many grew up watching.
Younger people, meanwhile, appear to be embracing modern football shirts from European clubs and current national team kits, often wearing them as part of a streetwear outfit rather than as supporter gear.
Whether those observations hold true everywhere, I can't say.
But it's what I've been seeing around Johannesburg.
So... Is Football Fashion Really Back?
Maybe it's just World Cup season.
Maybe I've simply started paying more attention.
Or maybe football shirts are quietly becoming part of everyday South African fashion again.
One thing is certain.
I'll definitely be keeping an eye on it over the next few weeks.
If I keep seeing old-school Pirates and Chiefs jerseys long after the football hype dies down, then perhaps this isn't just a tournament trend after all.
It might be the beginning of another fashion comeback.
