Why Everyone Is Suddenly Wearing Tech Runners in South Africa?

A few years ago, most people wouldn't have looked twice at a running shoe.

Today, it's a different story.

Whether you're scrolling TikTok, walking through your university campus, or grabbing coffee at your local mall, chances are you've spotted a pair of tech runners on someone's feet.

Johannesburg's Braamfontein feels like the battleground right now. From what I've seen, students at Wits University, the University of Johannesburg, and Rosebank College are fully tapped into the wave. The fits are getting crazier by the day, and honestly, it's becoming harder to decide which sneaker deserves the crown.

From the ASICS Gel-Kayano 14 to the Nike P-6000 and New Balance 530, these once-overlooked running shoes have become some of the most wanted sneakers in streetwear.

So what happened?

The Rise of the "Ugly" Sneaker

Fashion has a funny way of changing opinions.

The same chunky runners that were once called "dad shoes" are now being styled with baggy jeans, cargos, oversized hoodies, and even tailored trousers.

What was considered unfashionable a few years ago has somehow become the look everyone wants.

And honestly, it makes sense.

The trend is especially noticeable among students and young professionals. Between walking across campus, commuting to work, lunch breaks, and after-hours plans, people want sneakers that can keep up without sacrificing style.

Most people are tired of choosing between comfort and fashion.

Tech runners offer both.

Comfort Is Back In Fashion

One reason for the rise of tech runners is simple: they're comfortable. At least, that's what I think as someone who owns a few pairs myself.

Unlike flat-soled sneakers, shoes like the Gel-Kayano 14 and P-6000 were originally designed for running.

That means better cushioning, more support, and all-day comfort.

People are no longer choosing between looking good and feeling good.

They want both.

The Y2K Effect

The early 2000s — or "ama 2K" as some of us call it — are back.

From baggy denim and vintage jerseys to silver accents and layered designs, Y2K fashion has completely taken over.

Tech runners fit perfectly into that aesthetic.

Their mesh panels, metallic details, and futuristic designs look like something straight out of a 2005 sports catalogue, and that's exactly why people love them.

Which Pair Is Leading The Trend?

Over the last year, it feels like the sneaker conversation has completely changed.

Not long ago, everyone was talking about Sambas and classic low-profile sneakers.

Now it seems like every second sneaker enthusiast is hunting for a pair of Gel-Kayano 14s, P-6000s, or New Balance runners.

Right now, a few models seem to be everywhere.

ASICS Gel-Kayano 14

A favourite among sneaker enthusiasts thanks to its comfort, silver detailing, and versatile styling options.

Nike P-6000

One of the easiest tech runners to wear. Sporty, lightweight, and available in some of the cleanest colourways on the market.

New Balance 530

A simple everyday option that works with almost anything in your wardrobe.

New Balance 2002R

Comfortable, premium, and often considered one of the best all-round lifestyle sneakers available today.

Are Tech Runners Here To Stay?

That's the big question.

Some sneaker trends come and go.

Others become part of everyday fashion.

Right now, tech runners seem to be doing more than riding a trend. They've become a go-to choice for people who want comfort, versatility, and a little bit of nostalgia.

Whether you're into streetwear, casual fits, or simply want a comfortable sneaker that still turns heads, it's easy to see why so many people are making the switch.

Fede Question of the Week

What's your current favourite tech runner?

  • ASICS Gel-Kayano 14
  • Nike P-6000
  • New Balance 530
  • New Balance 2002R
  • Something else?

Personally, the Nike P-6000 is one of the easiest pairs to wear right now. It's comfortable, versatile, and works with almost anything. But that's just my opinion.

I say the P6000s are the best if you are looking for something that screams in silence. Got my pair in 2024 back when the trend was not at its peak. Nice read by the way❤️
